Choose a way to measure

Use a soft tape over light clothing. Keep it level and comfortably close, not tight. Measure all the way around for chest, waist and hips.

Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms.
Waist: around the natural waist, without pulling in.
Hips: around the fullest part of the seat.
Height: stand barefoot against a wall and measure from floor to top of head.

Use the same kind of garment that fits comfortably now. Fasten it, lay it flat and smooth it without stretching. Measure straight across, not around.

Chest width: across the garment just below the armholes.
Waistband width: across the waistband while relaxed. Do not stretch elastic.
Length: for a top or dress, from the highest shoulder point to the hem; for a skirt, from the top of the waistband to the hem.
Inside leg: from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside seam.

Body measurements go around the child. Flat widths go across a garment. They are not interchangeable; do not compare one directly with the other.
